Our area has the world's largest US Coast Guard Base, one of the top 100 small towns, the world's top beach, and rivers that dwarf the Mississippi (OK, we concede it is longer, but it can't touch the width of ours). We have the nation's only highway and waterway welcome center. The first community college, College of the Albemarle, is located in Elizabeth City and the first school in North Carolina was here in 1705. Commercial soybean processing was invented here in 1915.
Well, you get the idea...We're a superlative kind of place.
